Best Time to Trek Gokyo Lakes
The best time to go on the Gokyo Lakes trekking adventure is during the favorable seasons of spring and autumn. This is the time when the temperature is mild and the weather is stable. Winter will be frigid, foggy, and snowy, whereas summer will be wet and sweltering. March, April, and May are the warm months before the onset of hot and wet monsoon. Likewise, September, October, and November are delightfully cozy prior to the cold of winter sets in. The monsoon brings a hot, humid, rainy, and dusty climate. June, July, and August are the wet monsoon/summer months with heavy downpours and leeches and bugs at the lower altitude forested trails.
Autumn and spring are also the festive seasons with important festivals in the Everest Himalayan region, Dumji and Mani Rimdu. Dumji usually falls in May or June of spring and Mani Rimdu falls in either September or October months in autumn. You can witness the vibrant celebration of these cultural festivals in monasteries like Tengboche and Khumjung during your trekking journey. Autumn also brings the two major festivals of Hindu, Dashain and Tihar. You can even partake in the festivities along with the villagers, who welcome you with open arms.

So, let’s delve into the insights he wishes to share regarding a typical day on the Gokyo Lakes trekking journey with Mount Fuji Adventure.
Yoko Ono (Japan):

Every day during the Gokyo Lakes Trek, I used to wake up early and begin the day with a cup of hot tea/coffee. Soon after, I used to have a nice light breakfast, mostly eggs and jam bread. At around 7 to 8 A.M, I used to pack my daypacks and head out for the particular day’s trek with my guides and porters. However, the timing was not same always and depended on the difficulty of the routes and distance that had to de covered on a day. Porter used to carry my luggage, and the guide used to help me with navigation. So, I have to say that I did enjoy the Gokyo Lakes Trek freely, safely, and to the fullest.
Each day was a rewarding journey exploring the rich Himalayan culture and beauty of the Everest region. I traversed varying landscapes, taking in the captivating sceneries and views of the snow-covered mountains. On the way, I photographed the natural marvels and cultural encounters. I took short breaks to rest and recharge whenever I felt needy.
Around midday, I stopped at one of the traditional Sherpa teahouses along the trail to have a delicious lunch. My preferred meal was a typical Nepali Dal Bhat, as it would fill my tummy like no other. After lunch, I used to rest in a teahouse for some time and continue trekking with revived energy. Finally, I used to reach our destination spot around late afternoon and, at times, during eveningtime. I used to stroll around the village till it got dark. In the evening, I used to retreat in the teahouses and take some rest time before dinnertime. Around 8 PM, I used to enjoy delectable dinner and chat with fellow trekkers before going to bed. Finally, I used to have a restful sleep.

Is a Guide Needed for Gokyo Lakes Trek?

Though the Gokyo Lakes Trek is not highly difficult, it is also not easy to do without a guide.
A guide shows you the way and helps you in navigating the remote Himalayan terrains. They are well-known about the trekking areas and and can detail you about the history, culture, and traditions of the places you visit. They will help you provide insightful and immersive trekking experiences and enrich your journey.
From April 1, 2023, the Nepal Tourism Board has stated a rule that you are not permitted to trek without a guide. You must mandatorily hire a professional government license holder guide with proper experience while embarking on remote high-altitude trekking in the Himalayas. This guide must be registered with the Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN). Since it is a compulsory rule, you need to hire a licensed and well-trained guide for the Gokyo Lakes Trek.
Why is Porter Important?
A porter frees you from the burden of your heavy backpacks and other luggage. They carry your belongings and let you enjoy the journey to the fullest. Despite the heavy loads, the local Sherpa porters are familiar with the regional terrains, so they can walk quickly. At times, they get reached to the teahouse way earlier than you.
While it is not a must to hire a porter for the Gokyo Lakes Trek, you can consider hiring one. You can be relieved from the heavy duffle bags and trekking gears and focus and enjoy the trek profoundly.
Accommodations and Food During Gokyo Lakes Trek
The Gokyo Lakes Trek, which passes through the Everest Base Camp trails, offers some of the best teahouses in the Himalayas. You can choose from the several available teahouses or lodges where you can enjoy decent food and cozy rooms. Even in the peak trekking seasons like spring and autumn, it is less likely not to find a teahouse spot.
Accommodations in teahouse are usually ordinary with basic amenities. You can expect simple beds with a warm blanket, set of pillows and mattresses. The rooms will be shared with two to three fellow travelers. Additionally, toilets, bathrooms and dining hall will be available on the shared basis.
The teahouse menus include a wide variety of traditional Nepali cuisines and some popular Western dishes. Dal Bhat (rice and lentils) is a staple meal in the teahouse, which is often served with pickles. Other items like eggs (boiled, scrambled, omelets, and fried), noodles, thukpa, Yak steaks, Tibetan bread with jam, chowmein, momo, mushroom soups, burgers, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, etc, are commonly available in most teahouses along the trekking routes. In my personal opinion, it will be better to stick to the Nepali dishes, which help you to explore Nepali food culture. The international cuisines offered by teahouses are not up to the mark in terms of authentic flavors.
Altitude Sickness in Gokyo Lakes Trek
The chance of altitude sickness increases after going upward from 2,500 meters. However, the Gokyo Lakes Trek is a high-altitude Himalayan endeavor that will take you above 5,000 meters of elevation. For around 8 days, you will be staying above 3,000 meters altitude. So, there is a high possibility of altitude sickness during this mountain journey.
The major cause of altitude sickness is the depleting air level in the higher altitudes. As you ascend more to significant heights, the oxygen in the thinning air is also low. This causes you to experience several altitude symptoms like headache, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, pumping heart, insomnia, breathing difficulty, and loss of appetite. Be wary of such symptoms and immediately get down to the familiar elevations if you experience any of these. It is important to take your time and recover from the altitude sickness before you again ascend to the higher regions.
To prevent altitude sickness, the key measures are to drink enough fluids and hydrate your body, avoid alcoholic drinks, take a slow pace of ascent, take ample time to adjust to the height or take a diamox pill, which helps you acclimatize. In our 12-day Gokyo Lake Trek itinerary, we have included two rest and acclimatization days at Namche and Gokyo Lakes. So, you are less likely to suffer altitude sickness if you ascend slowly and acclimatize to the altitudes properly.
Travel Insurance for Gokyo Lakes Trek
Travel insurance counts as useful during any high-altitude adventurous journey. Gokyo Lakes trek can involve high-altitude risks like altitude sickness, weather adversity, landslides, etc. With travel insurance, you can have mental peace and enjoy a stress-free trekking journey. It provides financial protection by handling every unthought-of expense and urgency that strikes your Himalayan endeavor.
There is no saying when you may encounter illness, injuries, and accidents during your remote travel. Insurance helps you get out of those emergencies and provides you with immediate health assistance. Besides medical expenses, your travel insurance will cover the losses incurred from the loss or theft of baggage, natural calamities, bad weather, emergency helicopter rescue and evacuation, delay or cancellation of the trip, etc. So, it is essential to have all-inclusive travel insurance so that you can rest assured of difficult or risky situations and focus on your adventure.
