Upper Dolpo Trek

18 Days

Overview

The Upper Dolpo trek takes place in the largest district of Nepal, Dolpa, in the Karnali Province. Dolpo lies on the Tibetan border and has similar cultural and topographical features. At the western part of Dolpo lies Nepal’s largest Shey Phoksundo National Park. The Upper Dolpo Trek lets you experience the wilderness splendor of the rugged and remote far-western region of Nepal. This adventurous journey provides you with a solitary trekking experience in an isolated high-altitude region. The trek follows the off-the-beaten trails and unveils the hidden gems of the region in each proceeding step.

Upper Dolpo Trek takes you to the most backwood regions of the Himalayas. It is the wild adventure experience of venturing into naturally rugged landscapes like steep grey hills, arid rain-shadow regions, cliffs, meadows, high mountain passes, and deep gorges. It encounters you with the three challenging high passes, Nangda La, Shey La, and Jeng La. Nangda La Pass, at 5,350 meters/17,552 feet, is the highest elevation of the trek. While crossing these passes, you will be treated to the rewarding views of hills, valleys, and Himalayas. Deep valleys, high mountain passes, snow-covered mountains, turquoise Phoksundo Lake, the old-aged Shey Gompa, the rare and elusive Snow Leopard, etc., reward avid trekkers who visit here.

The Upper Dolpo trekking endeavor can be physically and logistically challenging, but the rewards are worth it. You will get to experience the typical mountainous lifestyle, hypnotic alpine landscapes, and the true essence of ancient, unique culture and traditions. Upper Dolpo is inhabited by the Gurung, Sherpa, and Magar ethnicities with ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture. They follow both Buddhism and the Bon Po religion.

People have a traditional lifestyle, which revolves around agriculture, animal husbandry, and trade. The region has remained isolated from the outer world for several centuries and far from the influences of modernization. Its remoteness and isolation have left its culture and tradition untouched and untampered. The region has various historical monasteries and chortens that carry rich historical and spiritual significance.

The Shey Phoksundo National Park is the largest in Nepal, encompassing an area of 3,555 square kilometers. This one-and-only trans-Himalayan National Park was established in 1984. The name ‘Shey Phoksundo’ comes from the two precious gems of the Dolpo region: Shey Monastery and Phoksundo Lake. The pristine Phoksundo Lake is inside this National Park amidst the alpine landscapes.

One of our past clients, Jonathon Brown, is sharing with you his firsthand experience of the Upper Dolpo Trek to let you know how is it to embark on this extraordinary journey.

Jonathon Brown (USA)

When I decided to do the Upper Dolpo Trek, I landed on several trekking websites to learn about the journey beforehand. I was a bit confused about whom to choose as my travel partner. There is a friend of mine who goes on wilderness treks in the Himalayas time and again. So, I thought he was the one to seek suggestions. He recommended that Mount Fuji Adventures is the best trekking agency to experience the easy, smooth, and exhilarating adventure. He claimed that he had done remarkable trekkings with this company, and his experiences with its team were always wonderful. So, I visited their site, and the meticulously created itinerary impressed me. I then decided to trek the Upper Dolpo with Mount Fuji Adventures.

Every day during the Upper Dolpo Trek, I used to wake up in the early morning and begin the day with hot tea/coffee. Then, I used to have breakfast and pack my belongings to head out for each day’s trekking adventure at around 7-8 A.M. My guides and porters used to accompany me, finding the way and carrying my backpacks.

I used to take several short breaks and utilized the time to rest, hydrate myself, and capture the beautiful scenery around me. After walking for a few hours, I used to take lunch at one of the traditional teahouses along the trekking routes. Shortly after, I used to continue trekking uphill and downhill till I reached the destination.

After reaching a designated spot for the night, I used to explore the place if time permitted. Then, I used to rest and freshen up in the teahouse and have dinner. After dinner, I used to enjoy for some time chatting with fellow trekkers, playing cards, and reading books. Finally, I used to sleep.
